3 Horse Health Tips

Tip 1: Ammonia inhalation into a horses lungs can hurt the health of horses, with foals being especially vulnerable.

As written by Tracy Williams in Equus Caballus, Tracy discusses the hazard which ammonia places on your horses health, in which a very small inhalation of only 10 parts per million over a 5-7 week period can cause dysfunction.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, ammonia is a toxic, reactive and highly hazardous chemical. Their recommendations warn that concentrations of greater than 50 ppm can cause serious harm to human beings. Even in the cleanest barns, ammonia levels in equine stalls exist well above this concentration. Furthermore, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services warns that humans exposed to ammonia can suffer chronic inflammation of airways, airway hyperactivity, and chronic irritation of eye membranes

Tip 2: Pay Particular Attention To Foals

Foals spend much of their youth near the floor of the stall where ammonia resides, leading to a much higher ammonia health risk in foals. In addition to this, foals are weaker and the ammonia’s adverse health effect’s are even more pronounced in young foals. According to Frederick Harper PHD written for the University of Tennessee, up to 15% of all foals will suffer from a severe respiratory health disease before one year of age.

About 15 percent of all foals have severe respiratory disease before they are one year of age. Problems appear from one month to one year of age. But, most respiratory diseases occur when the foal is 2-6 months of age.

Not only are these diseases costly and time-consuming to treat, but they disrupt other farm activities, such as foaling, breeding mares, training and showing…High ammonia levels have been associated with respiratory problems in foals, as well as other animals.

Young goals also have an immature respiratory system, making them more susceptible to disease. It has been reported that 10 ppm of ammonia is the level above which one might expect problems in animals. But, ammonia levels as high as 400 parts per million (ppm) were measured in foal stalls in one study. So it is important to reduce the level of ammonia in foaling stalls, and all stalls in barns where foals reside.

Keeping a clean, ammonia-free stall is especially important when it comes to foals, who are at greater risk for respiratory disease than older horses.

Tip 3: Reduce Flies in Horse Stalls

Ammonia gas and fecal matter have the dangerous effect of attracting flies and parasites. Stall Genie will eliminate moisture in the bedding, insect and internal parasite eggs need moisture to survive, so the reduction in moisture will improve the horse’s environment in more ways than just odor control. Essential oils in the product replace the harmful ammonia gas with a pleasant smell and serve as an insect repellent.

How Can Stall Genie Help?

Simple, by absorbing and eliminating deadly ammonia fumes and moisture. The absorption of moisture will help eliminate populations of parasites and flies which thrive with moisture, while the Ammonia absorption will improve the health of your horses and foals reducing veterinarian bills and resulting in a happier healthier horse.

Ammonia Health Risks In Horses

According to the International Veterinary Information Service, researchers M.S. Davis and W.M. Foster released a paper indicating that “as little as 10 ppm for 5 to 7 weeks can cause dysfunction of the horse’s mucus membranes, which decreases immune response and makes the horse susceptible to other pathogens.”

In 2001, Michigan State University’s Equine Pulmonary Laboratory released a study, which found that stabled young horses during training suffer respiratory distress compared to young horses that are pastured during training. The researchers reported – “We conclude that stabling is associated with inflammation of both the upper and lower airway of young horses.”

The article also reported – “Ammonia’s effects are exacerbated in foals, according to Frederick Harper, PhD and extension horse specialist for the University of Tennessee. According to Harper, approximately 15 percent of all foals suffer a severe respiratory disease before they are one year old, although most occur between 2 to 6 months. Since foals spend a great deal of time on or near the stall floor, ammonia exposure is heightened.

Horse Stall Bedding: Stall Genie Barn Test

A study was conducted in a 16 stall horse barn facility during December 2009 and January 2010 to determine the effects of Stall Genie on the production of ammonia gases.

THE TEST WAS CONDUCTED AS FOLLOWS:

1. Two stalls measuring 12 feet by 12 feet were utilized for the test in a 16 stall, well ventilated, barn. The base of the stalls is compacted dirt.
2. Two horses, a warm-blood gelding and a warm-blood stallion were used for the test.
3. Both horses were stabled at night and turned out to paddocks during the day. The average time the horses were stabled was 14 hours per day.
4. During the test period ammonia level readings were taken each morning after the horses were turned out.
5. Readings were established by utilizing the “pHydrion AMMONIA METER” manufactured by Micro Essential Laboratory. The test strip gives readings from 0 to 100 ppm of ammonia. The strip was used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and held approximately
12 inches from the wettest part of the stable floor for 15 seconds prior to cleaning.
6. In order to create a “Baseline” for the test the stalls were stripped of all bedding, cleaned and then fresh bedding applied (Without Stall Genie). The readings for the stalls without any bedding additive were between 50 and 100 ppm during a two day period.
7. After the initial two day “Naked” test the bedding was removed from each stall and approximately 8 oz of Stall Genie were sprinkled by hand on the area known to be the wettest part of the stall (Area of urination). The bedding was laid down and approximately 4 oz sprinkled on top of the bedding.
8. During the following seven days the wet bedding was removed each morning, replaced by fresh bedding and approximately 4 oz of Stall Genie sprinkled on top. The readings, prior to cleaning, during this period were consistently at 5 ppm or below.

NOTES:

9. Using Stall Genie is known to save one or more veterinarian visits per year. This one fact alone often pays for your Stall Genie product alone. Your horse will experience better health
throughout the year in its cleaner living environment. It was observed that the amount of soiled bedding being removed each day, when Stall Genie was being utilized was approximately 50% less than without Stall Genie.
10. Based on the published maximum retail price of $1.47 per lb and using 8lbs per month the monthly cost is under $12 a month or $.40 (forty cents) per day. This cost seems to be offset by the elimination of at least one vet visit per year. Not to mention the additional benefit of a healthy environment.
